Primary Objective : Making digital services more accessible to the public
Ajin Shibu, a Master of Social Work (MSW) student at Marian College, Kuttikkanam, specializing in Medical and Psychiatry, my journey in social work has taught me that many of the challenges people face are not always caused by a lack of services, but by the difficulty of reaching, understanding, and accessing those services. Through my academic learning, field practicum, community interactions, research activities, volunteering, and social initiatives, I have had opportunities to engage with different sections of society. These experiences helped me recognize a common concern: for many people, accessing an essential government or public service can itself become a challenge. Elderly persons may struggle with travelling and standing in queues. Persons with disabilities may face physical and accessibility barriers. People with limited mobility may depend on others even for simple administrative requirements. For digitally inexperienced citizens, online systems can sometimes be confusing rather than empowering. These experiences made me reflect on a simple question: “If technology can bring almost everything to our doorstep, why should essential public services still require people to repeatedly travel from office to office?” This question became one of the key inspirations behind HOMline e-Service. As a social work student, I believe that technology should be designed not only for convenience, but also for social inclusion, dignity, accessibility, and equality. A digital service should especially consider the people who are often left behind the elderly, persons with disabilities, people with mobility limitations, vulnerable communities, and those who find conventional service systems difficult to navigate.
HOMline e-Service is therefore not simply a digital service platform; it is a social innovation idea born from the belief that accessibility should be a right, not a privilege. The vision behind HOMline is to make essential services easier, more accessible, disability-friendly, reliable, and convenient, particularly for people who cannot easily travel to offices or navigate complex service procedures. By providing accessible 24 hour online assistance, HOMline aims to reduce unnecessary travel, physical barriers, waiting time, and dependency on others while helping citizens connect with essential services more conveniently. For me, the purpose of HOMline goes beyond developing a technology platform. It is about asking how technology can be used to restore independence, protect dignity, and create equal opportunities for access. I envision a Kerala where an elderly person does not have to struggle to travel just to submit an application, where a person with a disability can access services without unnecessary physical barriers, and where a person with limited mobility can receive assistance without feeling excluded from the system. My vision is simple: bring services closer to people, make technology work for everyone, and ensure that no citizen is left behind because they cannot physically reach a service. With HOMline e-Service, I aspire to transform my learning as a social work student into a practical innovation that combines social work, technology, accessibility, and human centred service delivery - contributing towards a more inclusive and digitally empowered Kerala .
